SEPTEMBER EVENTS – EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK 2014-Our Streets, our choices

Like every year, Larnaka Municipality organized with a great success the European Mobility Week (16-22 September) with the slogan “Our streets, our choice.”

The events that took place during this week aimed to promote sustainable mobility and encouraging people to use their bicycle as a mean of locomotion.

MOVE WEEK-FIND YOUR MOVE

Larnaka Municipality in collaboration with the Cyprus Sports Organization and the Open School, organized from September 29 up to October 5, 2014, the European MOVE WEEK. European MOVE WEEK is an annual European campaign that promotes sports and physical activity in the European societies. During the week, many sports events organized for the public. Europe Direct Information Centre in Larnaka supported the events, which was a big hit at any age!

‘Back to School with Hope’ from “Hope for Children” UNCRC Policy Center

“Hope For Children” UNCRC Policy Centre (HFC) in partnership with the Andrey & Julia Dashin Foundation announces for the second year the launch of the campaign “Back to School with Hope” to offer free school supplies to low-income families in Cyprus, as part of HFC’s program “Eradicate Child Poverty in Cyprus”.

Education is the key to a bright future and investing in education is a top priority for us. Therefore, the target is simple… to help as many students as we can to start the new school year with the necessary school supplies. The public’s contribution and our team effort should be demonstrated so that we can properly equip children in need and to spread the message to the society that even a small contribution to our fellow citizens constitutes a significant assistance. The campaign will be ongoing from September 2014 to January 2015.

On September 19th, an event for collecting school items will take place at Kimonos Square in Larnaca, from 17:00 until 20:00 in order to receive as many school supplies as we can for the “Back to School with Hope” campaign. The public can attend the event to drop new school items or used items in good condition. The event is organized in collaboration with the Larnaca Municipality and the information centre Europe Direct Larnaca.

On September 28th, from 17:00 until 19:00 Revealed Square in Nicosia, another event for collecting school supplies will take place at Faneromeni Square in Nicosia. The public can attend the event to drop school items players of APOEL will be present to sign autographs. Both events in Larnaca and in Nicosia will be covered by a live link by Deejay Radio.

EVENTS JULY 2014

FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship, Larnaka Cyprus

With a great success held the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship, which took place from 23 to 27 July at the Promenade of Phinikoudes, organized by Larnaka Municipality. The Europe Direct Information Centre in Larnaca was one of the official supporters of the World Championship and support approximately 400 volunteers who took part in the event.

“Let us create a better internet”

The event was held on July 25, 2014 on the Promenade Beach of Phinikoudes in Larnaka. The event was informative. Also, during the event we had Live Link and dancing. The Europe Direct Information Centre in Larnaka supported the event.

JUNE 2014-EVENTS

In the context of the emergence of the marine life and the biodiversity, created by the wreck of the Zenobia in Larnaka sea area, and the emergence of the wreck as an important tourist destination, was held the week 23 to 30 June 2014, the ” Zenobia Week.” During the week, was held an outdoor painting exhibition at the Foinikoude’ promenade, painted from schools. The pictures were showing the marine life posed by wrecks. Also, was held an outdoor photographic exhibition with stunning images from the Zenobia wreck and fish hosted on this artificial reef. Finally, the Workshop on «Developing a Diving Destination of Excellence» emphasized the importance of proper management of the techniques reefs in order to protect the marine life that was created there.

Environmental Tax Reform in Times of Economic Crisis: What Are the Prospects?

The event will be held on Friday, 6 June at the EU House, 30 Vyronos Avenue, Nicosia, Cyprus as a Green Week 2014 satellite event.

Environmental fiscal reform can shift the focus of government taxes and levies from labour and income to environmentally harmful and resource-depleting activities. The importance of environmental taxation is even more pronounced in countries such as Cyprus, which faces a serious financial and fiscal crisis. This event will address the future prospects of green tax reform in times of economic crisis. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English and Greek.

MAY 2014

On 9th of May, in the context of the celebrations for Europe’s Day, an event was held in the House of the Literature and Arts in Larnaka, entitled “EU funding for young people and not only!”. During the event, the participants had the oppurtunity to get informed about the ERASMUS+ programm and the open calls and procedures that must be followed.

From 9 to 11 of May, in the context of the celebrations for Europe’s Day and the 10 years of Cypru’s membership in the EU, an exhibition was was held in the House of the Literature and Arts in Larnaka, entitled “Cohesion Policy: Kick-starting the Cypriot economy”. The exhibition outlinited the key achievements of EU Cohesion Policy in Cyprus in the EU Multiannual Financial Framework for 2007-2013 as well as explaining the main investment priorities for Cyprus and how much the EU will invest in Cyprus for the period 2014-2020.

APRIL 2014

On April 2nd, was held at the House of Literature and Art, the event “Practical Tips for Working in the EU and European Projects Grant.” The event was held in collaboration with the Office of the European Parliament in Cyprus, the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus and the NGO Support Centre. The event filmed under the program Reclaiming Europe’s, which is co-financed by the European Parliament and implemented by the RIK1 and the European Office of Cyprus. The speakers of the event were the Financial Analyst, Mr. Michalis Stylianou, who presented the “Careers in the EU”, The EU Careers Ambassador Athanasia Constantine, which showed us all the details about internships in EU and Ms Nadia Karagiannis, Board Member of the NGO Support Centre and Research Officer at the University of Cyprus. Ms Karagiannis talked about grant programs of the EU, especially for young people. The followed a discussion with the audience.
